WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene)
World leaders meeting at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 committed themselves to attaining the Millennium Development Goal 7, target 10 which aims to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015. In 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg added another target: to halve by 2015 the proportion of people who do not have access to basic sanitation.
The goal of UN-Habitat’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme (WaSH) is:
- improving access to safe water and helping provide adequate sanitation to low-income urban dwellers and measuring that impact. By improving delivery of water and sanitation, and promoting policy dialogue, information exchange, water education and awareness raising.

Kenya, Oloika project
Due to the hardships associated with the lack of clean water and cultural practices such as early marriages and female circumcision, educational levels in the area are low. The girl-child is particularly affected as they are forced to drop out of school. Because of the nomadic character of life around Oloika, many girls have to walk long distances to school which exposes them to security risks. To increase the number of girls who finish school, with money of the Danish Embassy, a dormitory was put up at Oloika Primary School.
SHF was requested by Practical Action East Africa to finish the Oloika project with the building of a WatSan facility and matron’s house.

Kenya, School sanitation programme
Due to the high demand for appropriate Water and Sanitation (WatSan) facilities in schools SHF and partners decided to roll out a programme in this sector. The programme consists of two parts: a renewal and a tailor-made upgrading programme. We will engage with partners that have experience in hygiene awareness trainings. Those partners will implement the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) trainings at the schools. The contractor will train school personnel in maintenance and operations of the facility.
SHF will also extent its knowledge in WASH and project management trough trainings for the staff.

Southern Sudan, Water and Sanitation Southern Sudan, Rumbek, Lakes State
Currently only a very small percentage of the population in Southern Sudan has access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. Without these facilities, 1 in 7 children will die before they are 5 years old, due to contaminated water, bad hygiene and diseases. In January 2009 we have therefore started implementing a water and sanitation programme at several primary schools in Rumbek. This includes not only the building of facilities but also hygiene awareness and maintenance trainings for the children and the school administration as well.
