SOLID HOUSE FOUNDATION

Social Housing
Current rates of population growth and rural-urban migration, particularly in developing countries, have a serious impact on living conditions in human settlements. It is estimated that 1.1 billion people currently live in inadequate housing conditions in urban areas alone. In many cities of developing countries, more than half of the population live in informal settlements, without the security of tenure and in conditions that can be described as life- and health-threatening. Available data suggests that an increasing percentage of women and children comprise the estimated 100 million homeless people.

While increasing housing production and improving existing housing stock are very important in every society, these activities must be paired with actions that specifically focus on the human rights aspects. A rights-based approach to development in the housing sector can:

  • Empower the poor and the homeless;
  • Promote security of tenure, particularly for women and vulnerable groups in inadequate housing conditions;
  • Strengthen protection against forced evictions and discrimination in the housing sector
  • Promote equal access to housing resources
  • Provide remedies when housing rights are violated

Bolivia, Microcredit for housing
Your own home, paid for yourself
According to the Bolivian vice Ministry of Housing and Urbanism, 46% of the existing housing stock has a qualitative low level and quantitative deficit of 200.000 houses. Source
To be able to improve both the quantitative and qualitative situation of the people in the East of Bolivia, Solid House Foundation has executed a housing Pilot project, where four houses were built, each one with different architectonic typologies and materials. On the basis of the results and analysis of this first Pilot a housing menu for the specific region and families will be created.
